The Houston Geological Society has a long-standing affiliation with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). AAPG was formed in 1917, and HGS was formed in 1923 to host the first AAPG convention. The AAPG website is at www.aapg.org. HGS recently hosted the 100th Anniversary AAPG Annual Meeting at the George R. Brown Convention Center in April 2017. HGS acts as the host society for the AAPG annual convention and exhibition when Houston is the convention city. As the host society, the HGS organizes volunteer committees to run the AAPG Technical Program, including the selection of papers and posters, field trips, and short courses for the Houston conventions.
The Houston Geological Society is financially and organizationally separate from AAPG, running its own programs and electing its own officers. Many HGS Past Presidents and Board members have also successfully been elected to top AAPG offices, including AAPG President, AAPG Division Presidents, and AAPG Sections Presidents.
